CALI, Colombia — A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, killing at least 111 people, damaging hundreds of buildings and leaving many trapped under debris while their loved ones and rescue workers searched through rubble.
The magnitude 7.4 earthquake caused significant damage and over a dozen fatalities in Colombia, with shaking felt as far away as Ecuador, Venezuela and Panama.
Nearly 20% of global earthquakes measuring 6.0 or higher occur in Japan. Since 2011, when a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami triggered meltdowns at three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Japan has significantly strengthened its earthquake warning systems and evacuation protocols.
The earthquake caused dozens of injuries, according to Japanese media. At a shopping mall, people were trapped after an explosion.
At least 254 deaths have been reported so far, as rescue workers continue to sift through collapsed buildings.
